I first came to New Orleans in 1991, lost. With every return in the last 30 years, I am found. It’s hard to explain my attraction or what I’m looking for. Mardi gras just seems to be a perfect place for an outsider to rewrite his life.
I shoot portraits and scenes in a sequence of images to capture the fluidity of the street. The time and space between each image is as important as the time and space captured in each photograph. I’m not distant with my camera. I’m part of the crowd. I collaborate, confront, and encourage my subjects to play with me to be themselves. And in return they trust me with their street identities.
I ask a lot from my subjects in these sequences, and the sequence asks a lot of my audience. It’s a puzzle.
